The 2010 Vareo National Championships took place in Torbay and was hosted by the Royal Torbay Yacht Club. The event took place between the 4th & 7th of September and provided competitors with a wide range of wind and sea conditions.

The 1st race kicked off with the most settled conditions with a slight sea and force 2 to 3 winds. A long beat to the windward mark resulted in the fleet splitting left and right. Cheryl Wood, Anthony Payne and Andy Temple read the conditions well and took the left. Downwind there were a few positional changes and by the time the course was shortened to 2 laps. Andy Temple maintained his lead, Andrew Wilson 2nd and Nigel Tinkler 3rd.
2nd race with a bit more wind and sea and it was Temple showing fast upwind speed again which was beginning to set a bit off a trend. Matt Yallop was getting into his stride after a slow start and was going fast upwind. On turning the corner Tinkler and Richard Willows closed the gap on the leaders. By the end of the 2nd lap Yallop protected his position on the other two and finished 1st, Tinkler 2nd by a boat’s length from Willows who was 3rd.

Sunday arrived with a force 3 to 4 and a few rollers to make things interesting. Race 3 saw most of the fleet take the favoured left hand. Heavier sailors appeared to be able to maintain speed up the gruelling beat and power through the waves. However Andrew Wilson showed that it was not fully the domain of the heavier sailor and was going fast in his new boat. Final positions were Temple a comfortable 1st, Wilson 2nd and Yallop 3rd.    Race 4, again Payne had blistering speed upwind but was unable to maintain it downwind as he was always on Temple’s heels by the first mark. This was a shootout between Temple, Yallop and Wilson who finished in that order.   Race 5 produced the best wind of the day and the long beat was beginning to have its toll on a few tired legs. Runs were fast and furious with some great surfing off the front of the waves. Downside was the arrival at the leeward buoy in double quick time ready for the slog back to the top. Temple 1st, Wilson 2nd and Yallop 3rd. These three were drawing away from the rest of the fleet.

Monday was Black Monday, only because you could not see. Torrential rain with black clouds saw sailors huddling together under shelters peering out into the gloom. The only thing that could be seen was the pier, only because the visibility was that bad the sodium lights had come on. Eventually the fleet set sail in search of the Committee boat. For Race 6 the Vaeos just followed the 600’s in the vain hope they knew where the windward buoy was. Winds were a light force 3 but unusually the seas were beginning to build – which should have been a bit of a clue to what was to come. There was a lot of positional changing in this race and everyone was in the mix at some stage. Julian Brooke – Haughton was showing some good speed both upwind and down. Again it was Temple 1st, Yallop 2nd and a ever improving Willows 3rd.

Race 7 was the knockout; to begin with Chris Romans and Chris Moore give the fleet a lesson in starting and crossed the fleet on Port. Well nearly, Romans had to tack back half way across but Moore made it. The wind continued to build and by the final run down it was survival time. By this time Wilson had crashed and burned, which was audible enough for the rest of the fleet to hear.  Temple revelled in it and was well ahead. Payne, Yallop and Tinkler were all in a line pushing for 2nd. Yallop gybed 1st and went screaming off towards the line, so did Payne. Tinkler decided to test the water and have a rest. Immediately after the finish Payne went for a swim and Tinkler enjoyed his dunking so much the first time he went for another 50yds from the line. With Moore grimly hanging on to cross in front of him. By this time most of the fleet had sensibly dropped their kites. Race 8 was wisely abandoned by the Race Officer.

Race 9 on Tuesday saw the wind blowing from the west and a lot lighter. All the fleet were mixing it again with big splits both upwind and downwind as it not seem to pay to go up or down the middle. Willows who was well back on the final run but was observant enough to see a big black cloud on the left of the race track – he took the hint, and it paid off. The first the front runners were aware of it was when they saw a yellow kite come screaming across on starboard in front of them to take 1st. Romans sailed a solid race for 2nd and Wilson 3rd.

Last race of the championships was fitting to have the top three finishers with Temple 1st and a well deserved National Champion winning 7 of the 9 races. Wilson 2nd and 3rd overall also winning the Grand Masters Trophy. Last years champion Matt Yallop 3rd and was 2nd overall.

Cheryl Wood took the Ladies Trophy and Nigel Tinkler the Masters and Chris Wood the Endeavour Trophy. The racing was close with some much improved sailors showing they can mix it and get results. Credit to the Royal Torbay Yacht Club who catered and looked after the vareo’s and 600’s both on and off the water for a very successful championships.
